Michael Hope Michael is 5 years old now and getting ready to start kindergarten in the Fall. He will be attending Sam Houston elementary and just like other boys his age he loves playing cars and playing with his dog. Michael has swimming, horseback riding and physical therapy three to four times a week. These activities help with his flexibility and maintaining mobility. He was accepted into a drug study program last Fall and is currently taking monthly trips to Washington D.C. with either his Mom or Dad. They do regular testing and monitoring of his strength. He takes a lot of medicine but he doesn’t mind. Michael sleeps with ankle orthoses which he likes to call his “boots”. They help to keep his Achilles tendon from tightening. He has also been fitted for his first wheel chair. While he can still walk and tries to run, he does tire a lot sooner than other kids his age. The wheel chair is for those long walks, at the mall or trips to D.C. As you can see, their lives are slowly changing.
